How to Get Rid of Whiteheads: The Korean Method

By The KŌRA LAB Team

To get rid of whiteheads, clear the trapped oil and dead skin inside the pore: use a BHA cleanser daily, deep-clean with a weekly clay mask, keep skin hydrated and balanced, and never squeeze. Whiteheads are clogged pores closed over by skin, so they need dissolving, not forcing. Here is the gentle Korean method that clears them and keeps them away.

What are whiteheads?

A whitehead is a clogged pore, sebum and dead skin trapped inside, but unlike a blackhead the pore is closed over at the surface, so the contents are not exposed to air and stay white or skin-coloured. They are a mild form of acne (a closed comedone) and gather where skin is oiliest: the forehead, chin and nose. The fix is to dissolve the blockage and stop pores re-clogging.

Step 1: clear pores with BHA

BHA (salicylic acid) is your best tool. Being oil-soluble, it gets inside the pore to dissolve the sebum and dead skin that form whiteheads, and it helps prevent new ones. A daily BHA cleanser is a gentle, effective way to keep closed comedones from building up.

In the evening, start with an oil cleanse like the NEOGEN Calming Cica Tree Cleansing Oil (€18.90) to dissolve the sebum that feeds whiteheads, then follow with your BHA foam.

Step 2: deep-clean with clay

Once or twice a week, a clay mask draws out the deeper congestion that turns into whiteheads. A swipe-on clay stick makes it easy to target the chin, nose and forehead. Use it after cleansing for a smoother, clearer surface and fewer clogged pores.

Step 3: keep skin balanced

Whiteheads thrive when skin is either stripped (so it overproduces oil) or clogged by heavy products. Use a light, non-comedogenic moisturiser to keep the barrier balanced, and a lightweight daily SPF. Avoid rich, pore-clogging creams on whitehead-prone areas, and resist squeezing, which inflames the pore and can leave marks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between whiteheads and blackheads?

Both are clogged pores. A blackhead is open at the surface so the contents oxidise and darken, while a whitehead is closed over by skin and stays white. The treatment, dissolving with BHA and clay, is the same.

Should I squeeze whiteheads?

No. Squeezing tears the pore, spreads bacteria and can cause inflammation and marks. Dissolve them gently with BHA and clay instead.

How long do whiteheads take to clear?

With daily BHA and a weekly clay mask, most people see fewer whiteheads within two to four weeks. Keep the routine consistent, since they return if pores re-clog.

Can moisturiser cause whiteheads?

Heavy, comedogenic creams can. Choose a light, non-comedogenic moisturiser, which keeps skin balanced without clogging whitehead-prone areas.
