Korean Double Cleansing: How to Do It in 2 Steps

By The KŌRA LAB Team

Korean double cleansing means washing your face twice: first with an oil-based cleanser to dissolve makeup, sunscreen and sebum, then with a water-based foam to clear sweat and daily grime. Done in this order, it removes everything a single wash leaves behind without stripping your skin, which is why it is the foundation of almost every Korean skincare routine. Here is exactly how to do it, in two simple steps.

In this article

What is Korean double cleansing?

Double cleansing is a two-stage method that uses two different types of cleanser, one after the other. The logic is simple chemistry: like dissolves like. An oil-based cleanser breaks down the oily things on your skin that water cannot shift, such as makeup, SPF and the sebum your skin produces through the day. A water-based foam or gel then washes away the water-soluble debris like sweat, dust and pollution.

One cleanser alone usually does half the job. A foaming cleanser on its own struggles to fully remove long-wear sunscreen, so residue builds up and clogs pores. An oil cleanser on its own can leave a faint film. Used together, in the right order, they leave skin genuinely clean and balanced, which is the whole point: a clear canvas so the rest of your routine can actually work.

How to double cleanse, step by step

The full process takes about two minutes and belongs in your evening routine. In the morning, a single water-based cleanse is usually enough.

  1. Start on dry skin. Apply the oil cleanser to a dry face with dry hands. Water at this stage stops the oil from binding to makeup and SPF.
  2. Massage for 30 to 60 seconds. Work it in small circles so it dissolves everything it needs to.
  3. Emulsify, then rinse. Add a little lukewarm water and keep massaging until the oil turns milky, then rinse it all away.
  4. Follow with a water-based cleanser. Lather a foam or gel cleanser and massage for around 30 seconds, then rinse.
  5. Pat dry and move on. Gently pat your face and go straight into your toner while skin is still slightly damp.

Step 1: the oil cleanse (dissolve makeup and SPF)

Your first cleanse does the heavy lifting. Choose a cleansing oil that emulsifies cleanly so it rinses without a greasy residue. If your skin is sensitive or congested, a soothing oil with calming botanicals is a smart pick because the first cleanse is also the longest massage your skin gets all day.

Step 2: the foam cleanse (clean without stripping)

The second cleanse should leave your skin fresh, never tight. That tight, squeaky feeling is a sign a cleanser has stripped your barrier, which only triggers more oil and irritation. A low-pH, hydrating foam cleans thoroughly while respecting your skin. If you have dry or dehydrated skin, a hyaluronic acid foam adds moisture as it washes. If your skin reacts easily, reach for a fragrance-light, sensitive-skin foam.

Should everyone double cleanse?

Double cleansing helps most people, but how often depends on your day.

If you... Double cleanse? When
Wear makeup or SPF Yes Every evening
Have oily or acne-prone skin Yes Evenings
Have very dry or reactive skin Sometimes Evenings you wore SPF or makeup
Just woke up No A single water-based cleanse is enough

Common double cleansing mistakes

Three quick fixes make a big difference. First, do not skip the emulsifying step: if you rinse the oil before it turns milky, you leave a film behind. Second, use lukewarm water, not hot, which dehydrates skin. Third, do not over-scrub. Cleansing is about dissolving, not friction, so let the products do the work and keep your touch gentle.

Frequently asked questions

Is double cleansing good for oily, acne-prone skin?

Yes. The right cleansing oil dissolves the sebum and SPF that clog pores, and because it does not strip the skin, it can actually help calm excess oil over time. Follow with a low-pH foam to keep pores clear.

Do I need to double cleanse in the morning?

No. Mornings only need a single water-based cleanse to refresh skin and remove overnight product. Save the full double cleanse for the evening, when you are removing makeup, sunscreen and the day's grime.

Will an oil cleanser break me out?

A well-formulated, emulsifying cleansing oil rinses away completely and rarely causes breakouts. Breakouts after oil cleansing usually come from not rinsing thoroughly or skipping the second cleanse, so make sure you emulsify and follow with a foam.

What is the difference between a cleansing oil and a cleansing balm?

They do the same job. An oil is liquid and spreads fast, while a balm is solid and melts on contact. Choose whichever texture you prefer; both are excellent first cleansers.
